The Welland Whalers had 43 shots on net but were unable to capitalize on their chances, as the Whalers fell to the Orillia Tundras 4-1 Saturday night in Welland.
The opening period saw the Tundras take a 3-1 lead on a pair of goals by Travis Fuller and a single goal by Kevin Shoebridge. Whalers leading scorer Dan Marwick replied for Welland.
The Tundras extended their lead to 4-1 when Leiland Gauley scored a power play goal midway through the second period.
Dan Earles was outstanding in the Orillia net with 42 saves. Rick Miller made 37 saves on 41 shots in net for the Whalers.
The game was a crucial one for the Whalers as a win would have vaulted Welland above the Tundras into fourth place, which is the final playoff position.
The Whalers have three games left in the regular season and will play two of them on the road next weekend, with games against the Whitby Dunlops on Saturday and a rematch against the Tundras on Sunday. The Whalers’ final regular season home game will be Saturday, February 16th against the Dunlops.
