A missed penalty shot with 1:03 left in regulation time resulted in the Welland Whalers getting their first franchise regular season win Friday night in Orillia.
The Whalers were leading 5-4 late in the third period when Whalers’ Tanner McGowan was called for a delay of game penalty, resulting in a penalty shot being awarded to the Orillia Tundras. Kevin Shoebridge of the Tundras took the penalty shot but was unsuccessful, giving the Whalers a 5-4 win.
After a scoreless opening period, the Whalers scored four goals in the second period to take a 4-1 lead heading into the third.
Dan Marwick had two goals for the Whalers while John Williamson, Tanner McGowan and Joe Forte also scored.
The Tundras outshot the Whalers 38-28.
Cody Vinnai made 34 saves for the Whalers to earn the win.
The Whalers will look to get their second win of the season when they take on the Whitby Dunlops Saturday night at the Welland Arena. Game time is 7:30 pm.
