Snappers Unable to Contain River Rats Offense
Date: Jul 15, 2025
Orlando, Fla. - The Winter Garden Squeeze got back in the win column and took back sole possession of fourth place in the FCSL after beating the Orlando Snappers 4-1 on Monday.
What was supposed to be a neutral site game at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium ended being played at the home of the Snappers with Orlando being the visitors after a location change.
The night saw a pitching duel for the majority of the game, as neither team managed to get any runs on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning. Through the first five innings, seven out of the ten halves saw the side retired in order.
Starter Isaac Sewell (Arkansas State) pitched well once again for the Squeeze. The Red Wolf and 2025 all star threw four full innings, did not allow any hits or runs and only walked two batters while striking out four more.
“I was just trying to do what I always do,” Sewell said after the game about his performance. “So I was just trying to go out there and compete with what I had to work with.”
It took a little while, but the fireworks started going off in the home half of the sixth for Winter Garden. Caleb Scott (Bethune Cookman) hit a two RBI double into center field that brought home Cole Steinmetz (Valdosta State) and Dominic Donatucci (State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota) to score and give the Squeeze a 2-0 lead.
That lead would get cut in to as the Snappers found an immediate response in the top of the seventh. Hayden Gustavsson (Louisiana Tech) put a big swing on an 0-2 pitch and sent a solo home run over the left field wall to make it 2-1 in favor of the Squeeze.
Just like they have all summer long, Winter Garden struck back. Steinmetz put an RBI base hit to the left side of the infield and Isaac Incinelli crossed home plate to extend the lead to 3-1 after seven innings.
However, they were not done there. The Squeeze put the final touches on one of their biggest wins of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning. Michael Thomas (Edward Waters) had his biggest moment of 2025 thus far when he lined a solo homer of his own out of left field in a hurry to put the stamp on the win and make it 4-1 going into the ninth.
“The pitcher had a good slider, but I knew he was coming back with a fastball,” said Thomas about his home run late in the game. “And I got a good pitch to hit and put a good swing on it.”
The Squeeze play a crucial make-up doubleheader on July 15 against the Suns on the road at Conrad Park at 4:30 and 7:00 p.m. as the regular season draws to a close this week.
