The Sag Harbor Whalers and North Fork Ospreys split a crucial Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader on Sunday at Mashashimuet Park, with Sag Harbor taking Game 1 by a 6-2 score before North Fork responded in Game 2 with a 3-2 victory.
In the opener, the Whalers took advantage of six walks, two hit batters, and two Ospreys errors to score six runs — only one of which was earned — en route to a 6-2 victory.
Donovan Gevers (Georgian Court) picked up his second win of the season, allowing two runs on four hits over four innings. Trey Zaffiro (Lafayette) followed with three scoreless innings to earn the save, striking out seven and preserving the lead.
Sag Harbor’s offense was efficient with only four hits, but they made them count. In the second inning, Mario Cubello (St. John Fisher) got the Whalers on the board with a bases-loaded walk. Tyler Sirchia (Dartmouth) then delivered a key two-run single in the second inning that gave the Whalers a 3-2 lead.
Sag Harbor would add some insurance runs in the sixth inning, scoring three runs with two out to give them a 6-2 lead, which would be the final score of Game 1.
North Fork’s James Fagnant (Richmond) provided one of the bright spots for the Ospreys, going 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a stolen base. Starter AJ Mitchell (Dominican) took his first loss of the summer, allowing three runs — only one earned—across three innings.
Game 2 saw a bounce-back performance by North Fork, highlighted by a gritty outing from starter Cristian Rodriguez (Pace), who earned his first win of the season. Rodriguez tossed five no-hit innings, striking out six despite walking six. He combined with Diego Reilly-Bell (Fordham) and Matt Guido (Lycoming) to hold Sag Harbor to just one hit over seven innings.
The Ospreys grabbed the lead in the first on an RBI single from Thomas Matuszewski (Jefferson). North Fork would grab two more runs in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to Rocco Cimino (Pace) and a wild pitch that scored Trevor Dosenbach (Richmond).
Sag Harbor clawed back with single runs in the fifth and sixth. Torin McCann-Braun (Emerson) scored on a wild pitch that cut the deficit to 3-1. Matteo Cubello (St. Anselm) would lead off the bottom of the sixth with the Whalers' lone hit of the day being a single, and would later score on an RBI groundout from Ethan Righter (Hamilton) that got the Whalers within a run.
Guido would then come on in relief for the Ospreys with the tying run on third and would get Jaxon Beiswenger (Bucknell) swinging to end the sixth. Guido would pitch a 1-2-3 seventh to give the Ospreys the split in the doubleheader.
Eric Osterhus (Fordham) took the loss for Sag Harbor, allowing all three runs in four innings, though he struck out five. Adam Gross (Raritan Valley) provided three scoreless frames in relief.
The Whalers resume their four-game homestand after the All-Star Game with a match-up on Tuesday against the Westhampton Aviators at 3:30 PM. The first-place Ospreys at 17-10-1 return to Cochran Park to meet the second-place Southampton Breakers at 7 PM.
