Ospreys/Whalers Get a Doubleheader Split
Date: Jul 13, 2025
The Southampton Breakers and Westhampton Aviators split a doubleheader on Sunday at the Bridgehampton School, in which both teams returned to play following the HCBL All-Star Game on Saturday.
Game 1 saw the Breakers take a 10-0 win via the mercy rule after they scored five runs in the top of the sixth. Alex Apicella (Rowan College of Gloucester) and Luke Treese (Haverford) had a pair of RBI for the Breakers in the win.
Drew Sliwokowski (UMass) pitched a five-inning complete game one-hit shutout to win his fourth game on the season. Sliwokowski also lowered his ERA on the season to 1.00, which currently ranks him as the league leader in the HCBL. Sliwokowski, in addition to only allowing one hit to Westhampton batters, struck out six and walked four.
The nightcap of the doubleheader saw the Aviators split the twinbill with a 10-9 victory in front of the home crowd.
Southampton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a three-run home run by Patrick Gozdan (West Chester). The Breakers would add a run in the first from an RBI double by Luke Ciminiello (Stony Brook) to lead 4-0.
In the bottom of the first, Westhampton would score ten runs on no hits as they showed patience at the plate, walking ten times in the inning and getting three batters on base via a hit by pitch. The Aviators would lead 10-4 after the first inning.
Southampton would cut the lead to 10-6, getting two runs in the top of the third on an RBI double by Collin Quintano (Villanova) and a sacrifice fly by Derek Diaz (Le Moyne).
The Breakers would again cut the score with another two runs in the fourth on an RBI ground from Nick Slogik (Rowan College of Gloucester) and Quintano’s second RBI double of the game to make the score 10-8.
In the sixth inning, the Breakers got to within a run on a sacrifice fly by Gozdan for his fourth RBI of the game. Southampton would have the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with one out. Still, Aviators reliever Paden Mather (Wagner) would get the next two batters out to keep the Aviators ahead.
Mather would pitch a scoreless seventh inning to get the save and give the Aviators their 11th win of the season. Payne Lochridge (Southwestern), who pitched the first five innings for Westhampton, earned his second win of the season.
Quintano finished the doubleheader for Southampton, going a combined 3-for-5 with three RBI and five runs scored.
Quintano currently ranks at the top of the HCBL in all triple crown categories. Quintano has nine home runs and 35 RBI on the season, while tied with North Fork’s Thomas Matuszewski (Jefferson) for the batting title at .435.
Andrew Grenert (Pima CC) stole three bases for the Aviators in Game 2, giving him a total of 17 on the season, tying him for second place in that category with Sean Sweeney (Binghamton) of the Breakers, who had a stolen base in Game 1.
After a league-wide off day on Monday, both teams will return to play on Tuesday. The Aviators will travel to Sag Harbor to play the Whalers at 3:30 PM, while the Breakers go to Cochran Park to face the Ospreys at 7 PM.
