Ocean State Offense shines, Sharks strike hard in NECBL South Division Match-ups

Martha’s Vineyard Sharks vs Bristol Blues

Bristol, CT – The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks defeated the Bristol Blue 10-2 in a dominant performance, highlighted by a five-run ninth inning.  With this victory, the Bristol Blues improved to 20 wins on the season, heading into the All-Star break.

 

The Sharks jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning following a run scored on a walk. Bristol was able to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth when  Jack Hopko (Rhode Island) launched a solo home run. 

 

Vineyard took back the lead in the top of the fifth. Will Hampton (Vanderbilt) singled to drive in the first run while  Gio Colasante (Harvard) doubled to right field, driving in a run. The inning was capped off by a William Lybrook (Harvard) RBI single. 

 

The Blues answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth with another Jack Hopko RBI. However, the Sharks stole that run back at the top of the seventh inning with a Will Hampton wild pitch

 

The Sharks secured the win with a dominant ninth inning. The scoring started with a Gio Colasante RBI single while Lybrook added a two-run double. Ryder Dysktra (Southern California) added two more with a single to end the inning. 

 

The Martha’s Vineyard pitcher Colby McNeely (Rider) was given the win, while Andrew Abler (Harvard) was given the save. The Blues pitcher Noah Terzo (Central Connecticut State) was issued a loss on the season.

 

The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks return to the diamond as they get set for a doubleheader with the North Adams SteepleCats Sunday night. The Bristol Blues stay at home to play the Mystic Schooners Sunday night.

Newport Gulls vs Ocean State Waves

South Kingstown, RI – On a 4-4 day with six RBIs, Ocean State’s Matthew Brinker (Northeastern) led the Waves to a statement 15-4 win over the South Division leading Newport Gulls.

 

The Waves got the scoring started early, scoring four in the bottom of the first. Brinker had a 2-RBI double in the frame, while Gavin Greger (Bryant) and Zach Plasschaert (Fresno St) had RBIs as well.

 

Newport managed to cut the lead in half in the top of the third, but Ocean State was not fazed. Brinker responded with another RBI hit before coming home on a Plasschaert single. Coen Niclai (Oregon) stole home for the third run of the inning, giving the Waves a 7-2 lead. 

 

Ocean State added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth on another RBI double from Brinker, giving the Waves an eight-run cushion. For good measure, Brinker added a two-RBI inside-the-park home run in the seventh, before Brandon DeGoti (Miami) blasted a three-run shot of his own in the eighth. Newport battled back for two runs in the top of the ninth, but ultimately fell by a score of 15-4.

 

Corey Kling (South Florida) was issued the win, while CJ Bott (UCLA) took the loss for the Gulls.

 

With the win, the Waves are back at .500 at 15-15, while the Gulls drop to 20-11. Ocean State gets the next few off as their next contest is Tuesday, the 15th, against the Danbury Westerners. Newport is back at it on Monday, hosting the Mystic Schooners.
