North Shore Strikes out 12, Keene Dominants with 16-hit performance in NECBL North Division match-ups

Mystic Schooners vs. North Shore Navigators

Lynn, MA- The Navigators hosted the Schooners for a Friday night matchup that was dominated by pitching until very late in the contest. Joseph Hauser (Northeastern) was in command on the mound for the first five innings of the game, racking up nine of North Shore’s twelve strikeouts, with no runs earned during his time on the bump. 

 

In the top of the seventh inning, Mystic got on the board first, when Anthony Belisario (UConn) walked in Eric Cha (Northeastern) with the bases loaded to give the Schooners a 1-0 lead. 

 

The Navigators rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning and didn’t look back. Alec Welshans (La Salle) kicked things off when he laced a triple into center field, scoring Nater Wachter (UConn) to tie the game at one apiece. Sam Parks (Stonehill) followed up with an RBI single, driving in the go-ahead run to give North Shore the lead at 2-1. Alex Marot (Charleston Southern) kept the rally alive with an RBI single of his own to add an insurance run for the Navs going into the ninth inning. 

 

That was all she wrote, as North Shore’s pitching helped North Shore improve to 11-17 on the season, while Mystic fell to 13-18.

Danbury Westerners vs. Vermont Mountaineers 

Final Score: Vermont 4, Danbury 3

 

Montpelier, VT- The Mountaineers hosted the Westerners for a hard-fought back-and-forth game of baseball on a warm July night. Will Cook (Sacred Heart) got Danbury on the board first when he hit an RBI single to put the Westerners up 1-0 in the top of the second inning. Vermont would respond right back in the bottom of the third, when Jaylen Hernandez (Winthrop) tied the game up with a clutch RBI double, proving why he’s worthy of the NECBL All-Star selection he received.  

 

With the game tied at 1-1, Danbury wasted no time taking the lead back when Will Cook (Sacred Heart) struck again, hitting another RBI single to put the Westerners up 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning. 

 

It was back and forth for both teams during the heart of the game, as Dominic Camera (Fairfield) tied the game for the Mountaineers in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to make the score 2-2. In the top of the fifth inning, Danbury fired right back when Jack Lutte (Denison) drove in Garrett Larsen (Yale) on a fielder’s choice to give the Westerners the lead again at 3-2. 

 

Both teams calmed down on offense until the bottom of the eighth, when Dominic Camera (Fairfield) capped off his monster performance with a two-RBI double, putting Vermont up 4-3 going into the ninth. 

 

That was all the Mountaineers would need, as they improved to 11-19 on the season, while Danbury fell to 11-16.

Upper Valley Nighthawks vs Keene SwampBats

Final Score: Keene 9, Upper Valley 2

 

Hartford, VT – The Keene SwampBats went into Maxfield Sports Complex and came out with a 9-2 victory over the Upper Valley Nighthawks. The SwampBats' offense was the story in this game as they amassed 16 hits and nine runs in their 22nd win of the season.

 

Keene jumped off to an early lead in the top of the second inning, with Chandler Tuupo (Charleston Southern) notching an RBI single. In the third inning, the SwampBats added on four runs. RBI hits from Jack Herring (East Carolina), Ripken Reese (Kent St), Michael O'Brien (Arkansas), and a sacrifice fly from Ryan Jaros (Rutgers) got Keene those runs. 

 

The offensive onslaught continued in the fourth and fifth innings for the SwampBats. Herring collected his second RBI hit of the game, and Marshall Lipsey (FAU) took advantage of a wild pitch in the fourth. In the fifth, Ty Mainolfi (Boston College) ripped an RBI double to push the score to 8-0.

 

Upper Valley got a couple of runs in the seventh inning, but the consistent hitting from Keene had put the game out of reach. Cameron Boardman (Hartford) hit a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Preisano (Wake Forest), and later in the inning, Michael Trommer (Bucknell) scored on a wild pitch. In the ninth, the SwampBats added one more run off a Tuupo RBI single, and the game would end 9-2.

 

Max Weber (Felician College) got the win for Keene, going two innings of no-hit baseball. JC Franconere (Quinnipiac) was credited with the loss for Upper Valley as he allowed five runs in three innings of work. The SwampBats will return to action Tuesday when they travel to face the North Adams Steeplecats, while the Nighthawks will host the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks Sunday.

North Adams Steeplecats vs Valley Blue Sox

Final Score: North Adams 10, Valley 7

 

North Adams, MA – The North Adams Steeplecats defeated the visiting Valley Blue Sox on Saturday night by a 10-7 score. The Steeplecats got their 12th win of the season behind a six-run sixth inning.

 

North Adams got on the board in the first inning, with Cuyler Baxter (Wake Forest) scoring on a sac-fly from Robert Stang (Dayton). Valley wouldn’t get the scoring going till the top of the third, when Gavin Schrader (Troy) drove in Rees Kozar (Niagara) on an infield single to tie things up at 1-1. In the bottom of the inning, the Steeplecats regained the lead thanks to JT Thompson (Rutgers), who hit a sac-fly to right field and put North Adams back on top 2-1.

 

Gabriel Natividad (Winthrop) added another run on a sac-fly for the Steeplecats in the fourth, but the real damage was done in the sixth. In the top of the inning, though, the Blue Sox tied the game up. Nicholas Spaventa (UPenn) and Kozar picked up an RBI each on their respective sac-flys to make it 3-3.

 

In the bottom of the inning, RBI hits from Natividad, Baxter, and Thompson, followed by a bases-loaded walk from Collin Overholt (Ashland), gave North Adams a 9-3 lead.

 

Valley continued to fight back, scoring two runs in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Spaventa drove in two runs on a single. In the eighth, Chris Carson (Stony Brook) ripped an RBI single, and he scored on a Michael Elko (Richmond) sac-fly. In the bottom of the inning, North Adams capped the night off with Baxter scoring on an error to make it 10-7.

 

Kyle Salvati (Franklin Pierce) got the win for North Adams while his teammate Thomas Sullivan (Franklin Pierce) registered the save. Marty Coyne (UPenn) received the loss for Valley. The Blue Sox will attempt to rebound on Monday when they host the Danbury Westerners, while the Steeplecats will look to continue their momentum Sunday at home against the North Shore Navigators.
