7/3 Recap: Westhampton Bats Ignite at South Shore

Date:  Source: Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League

Westhampton 13, South Shore 3 (5 Innings)

The Westhampton Aviators bounced back in emphatic fashion Thursday afternoon, rolling to a 13–3 mercy-rule victory over the South Shore Clippers at William Floyd High School. Westhampton plated runs in each of the first four innings and rode a dominant offensive effort and steady pitching to win their eighth game of the season.

The Aviators’ bats came alive early and often, highlighted by Jasper Adelman (Lehigh), who had a monster day at the plate. Adelman crushed two home runs and drove in five runs, powering an Aviators lineup that combined for 10 hits and drew 10 walks.

South Shore jumped out to an early 2–0 lead in the bottom of the first behind an RBI single from Ryan Adams (St. John’s) and a Westhampton error. But the Aviators responded immediately with a four-run second, keyed by Adelman’s first homer of the day and a two-run home run by Mikey Brunetti (Bradley), which was his third of the season.

Westhampton broke the game open in the third, plating four more runs, with two-run hits from Jakob Chavez (Paradise Valley CC) and Luke Rizzo (College of Wooster). The Aviators tacked on five more runs in the fourth, including Adelman’s second blast and a two-run double by Grant Dalton (Lackawanna).

On the mound, Luke Savage (Kenyon) earned his first win of the season, tossing a complete game five-inning effort. Savage allowed five hits and three earned runs, while striking out six and walking only one. He also worked around a pair of hit batters.

Offensively for the Clippers, Anthony Rigogliosi (Adelphi) and Hillery each doubled, but the offense couldn’t keep pace after the Aviators’ big middle innings.

Westhampton travels to Southampton High School tomorrow for the Fourth of July Game with the Breakers at 2 PM, while the Clippers travel to Peconic to play the Ospreys at 3 PM for the fourth.

North Fork 4, Southampton 2 (8 Innings)

The North Fork Ospreys continued their impressive summer, grinding out a 4–2 victory over the Southampton Breakers on Thursday evening at Southampton High School to strengthen their hold on first place in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League. With the win, the Ospreys improved to 13-5-1, while Southampton slipped to 8-9-2.

Ospreys shortstop Rocco Cimino (Pace) came through in the clutch, going 3-for-5 with a double and driving in a pair of runs to pace the North Fork offense. First baseman Nick Pratt (UMBC) added two hits and an RBI, while Matt Fagnant (Marywood) chipped in a run on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth.

Southampton starter Andrew Houghton held the Ospreys in check early, tossing five strong innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts, but North Fork broke through against the Breakers' bullpen. Reliever Dylan Rorech (Villanova) took the loss, allowing three runs over three innings, including a decisive two-run rally in the eighth.

North Fork opened the scoring in the fourth inning on Pratt’s RBI single and then the HBP to Matt Fagnant in the sixth, but the Breakers answered in the sixth when Collin Quintano (Villanova) crushed his league-leading seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot that tied the score at 2-2

Both teams would fail to score in the seventh as the game went to the eighth and final inning. Cimino would come up to the plate in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded and one out by hitting a clutch two-run single that put the Ospreys ahead 4-2, which would be the final score.

On the mound, Pete DeMaio (Dominican) was brilliant once again for the Ospreys, working eight strong innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs while striking out five. He improved to 3-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.94. DeMaio navigated through a couple of tough innings but kept Southampton off balance with efficient pitch execution.

Southampton’s offense was limited to five hits, three of them coming from Quintano and one each from leadoff man Sean Sweeney (Binghamton), along with Luke Fisher (NYU). The Breakers stranded four runners on base, unable to capitalize on a few scoring chances.

The victory keeps the Ospreys comfortably atop the HCBL standings as they look to continue their strong stretch heading into the heart of July, while Southampton will aim to rebound and get back to .500.

Sag Harbor 3, Shelter Island 1 (8 Innings)

A pitcher’s duel turned into a late-inning comeback as the Sag Harbor Whalers scored three runs in the final two innings to defeat the Shelter Island Bucks, 3-1, on Thursday at Fiske Field. The win pushes the Whalers closer in the HCBL playoff chase, improving their record to 7-8-3 as their season is at the midway point.

For much of the night, Shelter Island starter Dylan Joseph (RIT, 6 IP, 3 H, 11 K, 0 ER) was in complete control, holding Sag Harbor scoreless over six dominant innings. But the Whalers finally broke through against the Bucks' bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings.

In the top of the seventh, Sag Harbor was down to their last out with runners at the corners when a wild pitch was thrown following a walk to Kieran Shea (St. John’s), allowing the tying run to score.

In the eighth and final inning, the Whalers tacked on an insurance run after Dylan Kennedy-Fujah (St. John’s) hit a two-run single to give the Whalers the 3-1 lead which would be the final score.

Shelter Island had taken an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Billy Fluharty (Bucknell) led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Alex Barrist (Lafayette). But that would be all the Bucks could muster against Sag Harbor’s pitching tandem.

Whalers starter Everett Garber (Middlebury) struck out seven over four innings despite allowing an unearned run in the first. Reliever Eric Wallick (Vassar) took over from there, pitching the final four innings for Sag Harbor to earn his first win of the season.

Shelter Island struggled offensively, managing just two hits—one from Fluharty and another from Jack Vallario (Fordham). The Bucks’ defense also faltered, committing three errors, including two crucial ones in the late innings that led to Whalers runs.

The two teams meet again tomorrow in Sag Harbor at Mashashimuet Park for the annual Sag Harbor Fourth of July game at 11 AM.
