Sanford Mainers vs. Mystic Schooners
Final Score: Sanford 13, Mystic 6
Groton, CT — The Sanford Mainers earned their fifth win of the season, taking down the Mystic Schooners in a high-scoring Wednesday night contest.
Sanford struck big early, as a three-run home run from Jack Toomey (Boston College) put the Mainers ahead 3-0 in the top of the first. Mystic would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, as David Mendez (Vanderbilt) scored on a wild pitch.
After a scoreless second and third, the Mainers took advantage of sloppy Schooner pitching in the fourth to pad their lead. Toomey and Brendan Sencaj (Bentley) had Sanford’s only hits in the frame, but thanks to five walks issued, Sanford added five to make the score 8-1. The Schooners once again only managed one run in response, as AJ Aschettino’s (Northeastern) single plated Jason Jelic (Xavier).
Mystic had a rally of their own in the sixth, as four runs came across for the Schooners. Sanford’s defense made two errors in the inning, proving crucial as the score was now just 8-6.
However, Sanford pulled away in the top of the eighth, marking their third big inning with another five-spot. Kellen Strohmeyer (Iowa) had the frame’s only hit, as the Mainers once again capitalized on walks and hit by pitches to put Mystic out of reach.
With the win, Sanford climbs to 5-10 and heads to Bristol tomorrow for a 6:30 pm contest. Mystic is now 7-9, as they host the Upper Valley Nighthawks tomorrow at 4 pm, looking to get back in the win column.
