Martha’s Vineyard Sharks vs. Valley Blue Sox

Final Score: Martha’s Vineyard 8, Valley 5

Holyoke, MA — Despite a ferocious ninth inning comeback by the Blue Sox, Martha’s Vineyard struck big in extras and held on for the 8-5 victory on the road.

A tight game throughout, Valley struck first on Clay Burdette’s (Xavier) league-leading fifth home run in the opening frame. The Sharks responded in the top of the third on a William Lybrook (Harvard) double, scoring Ryder Dykstra (USC). Dykstra then singled in the following inning, scoring Ethan Puig (Miami) and giving the Sharks a 2-1 lead.

But Valley responded right away, as back to back doubles in the bottom of the fourth by Mike Lucarelli (Penn St) and Cade Carr (Samford) evened the game at two. In the sixth, the Sharks extended their lead to 4-2 on Dykstra’s second RBI single of the day. An RBI single by Valley’s Nicholas Spaventa (Penn) in the bottom of the inning cut the lead in half, but the Sharks responded in the seventh with a solo blast from Blake Binderup (Texas A&M) to bring the score to 5-3.

The Sharks were shutout in the eighth and ninth, leaving the Blue Sox needing two in the final frame. They got just that, as Sebastian Mexico (Louisiana Tech) ripped a 2 RBI single to tie the game. With only one out, Valley could not complete the comeback as Rohan Lettow (Arizona State) came in and struck out the final two batters to send this one to extras.

Martha’s Vineyard responded in the top of the tenth with a big inning of their own, as a Dominic Moats (Maryland) single plated Jacob Kendro (Pitt) before a costly error scored two more. In the bottom of the frame, the Blue Sox couldn’t complete another rally and succumbed to the Sharks by a score of 8-5.
