Upper Valley Nighthawks vs Mystic Schooners (Game 2)
Final Score/8: Nighthawks 3, Schooners 5
Hartford, VT – The Mystic Schooners defeated the Upper Valley Nighthawks in game two of Thursday’s doubleheader, winning in extras 5-3. A slow start from both teams evolved into a closely contested extra innings win for the Schooners, who had led the majority of the game.
The Schooners got on the board first in game two. In the top of the third inning, AJ Aschettino (Northeastern) and Michael Torres (Miami) ripped back-to-back singles to set up Nick Locurto (Virginia Tech) with a great RBI opportunity. Locurto delivered as he laced a single into center, scoring Torres, and giving Mystic a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the Schooners added another run, this time, off the bat of Jake Kernodle (Princeton), who tripled to score Scott Penney (Rhode Island) and make it 2-0. Mystic was able to hold the Nighthawks in check after allowing eight runs in game one, with starter Andrew Cutler (George Washington) giving the Schooners 5 innings of one-run ball.
In the last inning of Cutler’s work, Upper Valley got on the board. Cooper Blauser (Jacksonville State) stole second, advanced to third on an error, and set the table for Nick Monile (North Florida), who singled to center and made it 2-1. The Schooners would add another run off the bat of Eric Cha (Northeastern), who homered, but the Nighthawks quickly tied the game up with Anthony Greco (William & Mary) scoring on a passed ball, followed by an RBI double from Monile.
In the eighth inning, Mystic took the lead once again. Anthony Belisario (UConn) was the auto-runner on second, and Penney drove him in with a single. Penney would later score off an error to make it 5-3, which would be the final. Toby Scheidt (Bryant) gets the win for Mystic for his 2.1 innings of one-hit ball, while Michael Bradshaw (Merrimack) takes the loss, allowing two runs (zero earned) in one inning.
The Schooners will host the Danbury Westerners Friday evening, while the Nighthawks will host the Bristol Blues Thursday as well.
Newport Gulls vs. North Adams SteepleCats
Final Score: Newport 6, North Adams 1
North Adams, MA- The SteepleCats hosted the Gulls for a one-sided affair by the away team. Matt Ossenfort (North Carolina A St U) got Newport on the board first with an RBI groundout to put them up 1-0 in the top of the second inning. Adrian Areizaga (Miami) followed that up with a sac fly to add to the lead, making it 2-0. In the top of the fourth, Matt Ossenfort (North Carolina A St U) struck again with a sac fly to make it 3-0. Matthew Bolton (Binghamton) hit an RBI groundout right after to make the score 4-0 Gulls going into the bottom of the fourth.
The SteepleCats would strike in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cuyler Baxter (Wake Forest) scored on a wild pitch to cut into the lead, making the score 4-1. That was about all the SteepleCats could muster, as any hope of a comeback was diminished in the top of the seventh inning when Matthew Bolton (Binghamton) hit a solo home run, and Andreaus Lewis (Manhattan) hit an RBI single to make the score 6-1 Gulls.
That was all she wrote, as Newport improves to 12-6, standing at number one in the South Division.
