NEWPORT, R.I. – Former Newport Gulls pitcher Nic Enright has been called up to the Major Leagues by the Cleveland Guardians.

A native of Virginia, Enright played college baseball at Virginia Tech from 2016 to 2019, pitching 138 innings over three seasons. In the summer of 2018, he joined the Newport Gulls, appearing in 14 games — four as a starter — and pitching 49.1 innings. That season, he led the team with 56 strikeouts, a mark that has yet to be surpassed by any Gulls pitcher since.

After college, Enright was selected by the Guardians in the 20th round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He steadily climbed through the minor league system, spending most of his time with the Triple-A Columbus Clippers. In 2023, he briefly played for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Miami Marlins' Triple-A affiliate, before being traded back to Cleveland later that year.

Enright’s journey to the majors took a challenging turn in December 2022, when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He credited MLB pitcher Carlos “Cookie” Carrasco, also a lymphoma survivor, with inspiring him through treatment and recovery.

After returning to the mound, Enright impressed in Triple-A, recording a 2.00 ERA over nine appearances for Columbus before earning his promotion.

He made his MLB debut on Sunday, May 25, against the Detroit Tigers. Though the Guardians lost 5–0, Enright pitched the final two innings, striking out three and allowing no runs in front of a crowd that included many family members and close friends.

“To be on that field and feel like I belonged was a really good feeling,” Enright said after his debut.

The Newport Gulls extend their best wishes to Nic Enright, whose resilience and determination continue to inspire.
