NEWPORT, R.I. – The Baltimore Orioles have named Newport Gulls alumnus Tony Mansolino as their interim manager following the dismissal of former manager Brandon Hyde, who was let go after a 15–28 start to the 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) season.

Mansolino played college baseball at Vanderbilt University in the early 2000s and spent the summer of 2004 with the Newport Gulls. Over his collegiate career, he posted a .276 batting average, including a career-high .333 in 32 games during his senior season. Mansolino was selected in the 26th round of the 2005 MLB Draft.

He went on to play six seasons in the minor leagues, with time spent in Single-A, High-A, and independent ball. He also had a stint with the Reading Phillies, the Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

After retiring as a player, Mansolino transitioned into coaching and quickly found success. He was named the 2017 Carolina League Manager of the Year while leading the Single-A Lynchburg Hillcats. Over the next three years, he advanced through the Cleveland Guardians’ farm system, moving from Single-A to Triple-A manager.

In 2020, Mansolino served as the interim third base coach for the Guardians before joining the Orioles' coaching staff the following season, where he has remained ever since.

Mansolino joins Warren Schaeffer ('05) as the second Newport Gulls alum to take over as interim manager in the big leagues this season. Schaeffer replaced Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black, who was relieved of his duties on May 11, 2025.

General Manager Chuck Paiva offered his congratulations, stating, “Congratulations to Tony Mansolino on being named manager of the Baltimore Orioles. Tony was our first player from Vanderbilt and truly built a solid foundation as a player with a high baseball acumen. He persevered through the minor leagues and worked his way to the majors. On behalf of the Gulls family, we wish Tony all the best as manager of the Baltimore Orioles.”

Mansolino made his managerial debut with the Orioles on Saturday, May 17, 2025. Unfortunately, the team lost 10–6 to the Washington Nationals after falling behind by seven runs in the first two innings.
