NEWPORT, RI — On May 12, the Colorado Rockies announced the dismissal of manager Bud Black following a 7-33 start to the 2025 season. In his place, the organization appointed third base coach and former Newport Gull Warren Schaeffer as interim manager.

Schaeffer, a key member of the Gulls’ 2005 NECBL Championship team, was selected by the Rockies in the 38th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. The Pennsylvania native played collegiate baseball at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.

In 2010, Schaeffer made his Triple-A debut with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, appearing in 33 games and batting .252 with 26 hits and 19 RBIs. He split time between Triple-A and the Double-A Tulsa Drillers until 2012, when he transitioned into coaching.

Schaeffer began his coaching career in 2013 as the hitting coach for the Tri-City Dust Devils, then Colorado’s High-A affiliate. He later managed the Asheville Tourists—then a High-A affiliate of the Houston Astros—from 2015 to 2017.

From 2018 to 2019, he managed the Hartford Yard Goats, Colorado’s Double-A affiliate, and continued to rise through the Rockies' system. In 2022, he was promoted to serve as Colorado’s third base and infield coach for the 2023 season.

Now stepping in as interim manager, Schaeffer will lead the Rockies through the remainder of the 2025 campaign.

General Manager Chuck Paiva had high Praise for the 2005 Champion, "Warren had one of the highest baseball IQs on the team. He understood the game, worked hard and could impact the game in many different ways; hitting, defense and base running." Paiva also had this to say about his leadership, "He always went about his business in a determined and professional manner. He played the game the right way and was a leader on the team."

The Newport Gulls proudly congratulate Warren Schaeffer on this significant career milestone and wish him the best of luck as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in Major League Baseball.
