Quarterfinal #4: Marquette University earns spot in Semifinals with defeat of Aurora:
The final quarterfinal game, between Aurora University and Marquette, saw the puck drop at 3:00pm. After swift movement up and down the ice by both teams, a tripping call would fall on Aurora at 6:52. Marquette had a couple of looks on the powerplay but were not able to finish the deal. So, the game remained scoreless. Back and forth play continued until Marquette found themselves in the penalty box with 2:35 left in the first period. As the Marquette powerplay expired Konrad Humke found a streaking James Gorman, who out raced the Aurora defenseman, and finished off the breakaway to give Marquette the game’s first lead at 19:35.
Aurora would get their own breakaway chance just before the four minute mark of the second period, but Jake Buttice’s glove kept the score 1-0. Marquette went on the powerplay for the second time in the game at the 4:37 mark. However, the tenacious Aurora penalty kill did not let Marquette get any high quality chances and came away unscathed. At 11:21 Marquette had a resident for the penalty box on a hooking call. Marquette withstood the challenge and kept their one goal lead.
Fifty-six seconds into the third period, Marquette, holding a precarious 1-0 lead, lit the lamp. Scoring off a wrist shot from the right dot into the far upper corner was Jack Rose. Aurora would finally get that initial tally at 3:23 when Liam Charlebois was in the right spot at the right time and put the rebound into an open net. The teams kept fighting and then with the puck behind the Aurora net goaltender Ryan Diaz was caught not knowing which way to move and as he attempted to squeeze up against the left post the puck bounced off him into the back of the net. Scoring for Marquette was Mac Ryan, assisted by Frank Shediac, at 5:17. Aurora went back on the powerplay at 7:37, looking to cut the Marquette lead back down to one. After two minutes of man advantage Aurora could not get a puck over the goal line and the game remained 3-1 in favor of Marquette. Regulation time was winding down and at 17:10 Aurora called timeout. As the teams made their way to the Marquette zone for the ensuing face-off Diaz stayed on the bench for the extra attacker. Marquette would seal the game with their fourth goal with 1:30 left in regulation. Scoring the emptynetter for Marquette was Rose off an assist by Chase Breslin. The final horn sounded with Marquette earning the final spot in the semifinals with a 4-1 victory.
