Quarterfinal #3: Marian overwhelms Roosevelt

Date:  Source: Northern Collegiate Hockey League

Marian University too much for Roosevelt University:
Marian started things off in front of their home fans at 2:27 when Jackson Sweeney snuck one past the Roosevelt goaltender. Twenty seconds later Roosevelt went on the man advantage, however, they were not able to capitalize. Marian went up two at 5:49 when Devon Butler wristed a shot from the top of the left point and found the five hole. The pressure kept coming from Marian and Simon Ellingson one timed a pass from Gavyn Galloway to put Marian up 3-0 at 10:53. Cayden Frenette took a nifty pass from Easton Nick as they entered the Roosevelt zone and fired the puck into the back of the net at 15:36 for their fourth straight goal. Roosevelt would get another chance to find their first goal when Marian was whistled for a tripping penalty at 17:00. As with their first man advantage they were not able to get the puck in the net.

Roosevelt started the second period on the powerplay after Marian was called for a penalty as time expired in the first period. Marian’s penalty kill held strong and kept Roosevelt scoreless. The first penalty of the game on Roosevelt came at 3:19. During the ensuing powerplay a shot from Fredette made it through traffic, putting Marian up 5-0 at 4:20. The Marian powerplay unit found themselves back on the ice at 8:23. With 30 seconds left in the man advantage Butler took a cross ice pass from Chris Regan and one timed home a sixth unanswered goal. An interference penalty on Marian at 14:42 put the Roosevelt powerplay unit back on the ice. Marian’s special teams unit came through again and kept Roosevelt off the board. With 2:29 left in the second period Marian struck for the seventh time as Ellingson notched his second goal of the game.

Back on the powerplay, Marian found the back of the net to go up by eight at 2:14 of the third period. Scoring through a screen, and ricocheting the puck off the pipe, was Jace Weber. Thirty-seven seconds later Marian would strike again, this time off the stick of Ellingson, his third of the game. Regan concluded the game’s scoring with his goal at 18:51. The convincing 10-0 victory put Marian in the semifinals to face the winner of Quarterfinal #4 between Aurora University and Marquette University.
