Gulls Lose Pitching duel to SteepleCats
Date: Jun 19, 2025
In their first consecutive win of the 2024 season, the Ocean State Waves took down fellow coastal division member the Mystic Schooners 7-2 on the road last night.
The game began not as the box score read in the end though, with Mystic taking a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, courtesy of Scotty Young and Anthony DePino coming across to score in the opening frame.
However, the Waves wasted no time immediately after with Rob Butler sending a blast over the fence in left to lead off the top of the second with a solo-shot to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
The Waves continued to crash along the shore, bringing in run after run with no answer from Mystic. The next feature of scoring was displayed in the very next inning where Donovan Cash knocked out the second single of his night; he later came home to score on a double steal from third, tying the game 2-2.
The fourth inning saw the largest increment of scoring from Ocean State as it was Cash once again using his bat in the favor of the waves, a rocketed shot to left field saw the outfielders stop jogging, watching the three-run homer disappear over the fence for a 5-2 lead.
After a scoring hiatus to follow from either side, the Waves added some insurance runs in the top of the ninth as both Jacob Cook and Aaron Walton who initially reached by walk came home to score, bringing the tally to a final 7-2.
The Waves return home tonight to host the Upper Valley Nighthawks in the first game of a two-part season series at Old Mountain Field for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
