Quarterfinal #1 Review: CUW earns spot in semifinals with victory over Roosevelt

Date:  Source: Northern Collegiate Hockey League

Quarterfinal #1 - #1 Concordia University WI defeats #8 Roosevelt University:
For the first half of the first period the puck spent a vast majority of the time in the Roosevelt University end. However, Concordia University WI could not find the back of the net. Things would change at the 10:26 mark. During an odd man rush, Roosevelt’s Jack Selby let a shot go from top of right circle which would get tipped as it made its way through a sea of players and find its way over the goal line. Selby’s goal gave Roosevelt an unlikely lead in the game. CUW would get its chance to even the score with a powerplay opportunity at 12:52 but were not able to convert. The CUW offense kept up the pressure and with 4:51 before the end of the period John Swiatek, forgoing the backhand shot, off a pass from Steven Delikat, in the lower slot, spun to his forehand and hit the lower left corner to even the game at one. Alexander Davis kept up his great play, turning away a number of quality chances, to keep the score 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Roosevelt had a chance just over a minute into the second period to retake the lead, but they were not able to finish off a 2-on-1 that became a 2-0. The CUW attack did not let up and at 4:55 Trenton Sherman put home a rebound to give CUW their first lead in the game. At the 8:59 mark Charles Emme made his way past the Roosevelt defense and as he skated across the front of the net chipped the puck past Davis, increasing the CUW lead to two. Roosevelt got their first powerplay opportunity at 11:14 when Rex Staudacher was whistled for a holding penalty. A second CUW player would find his way to the box with 9 seconds left on Staudacher’s penalty. CUW played an aggressive penalty kill and came out of the back to back penalties unscathed. Then, at 16:29 Emme scored his second goal of the game as Davis could not glove the shot.

The third period started with both team finding themselves with a man in the box. Just 32 seconds into the period Emme was denied on his first shot but would not be denied on the rebound, putting CUW up 5-1. A blocker save by Davis made its way out to the left point where Staudacher wristed home a shot into the upper left corner, pushing the lead to five. The CUW powerplay made its second appearance at 13:16 after a crosschecking call and as with their first opportunity they could not add to their goal total. Roosvelt did not give up and kept their effort to break the CUW goal streak. But with 48 seconds remaining in regulation CUW scored their seventh unanswered goal when a niffy pass from Emne to Sherman gave Sherman an open look to score his second goal of the game. When the final horn sounded CUW came away with a 7-1 victory and a spot in the semifinals.
