#18 Marquette University and Marian University battle in a home and home:
#18 Marquette University and Marian University will battle it out this weekend in a home and home series. Marquette will have the honor of hosting game one while Marian will return the favor in game two. This is the second to last divisional series for both teams. While only two points separate Marquette and Marian in the Black Division standings Marian currently enjoys a higher position, sitting in a tie for 3rd with #11 DePaul University (6pts) to Marquette 5th (4pts).
Last season, Marquette and Marian split their season series, with Marian winning the opener and Marquette the finale. The split pushed the all-time regular season record to 6-1-1 in favor of Marian, with two of their victories coming in overtime (one on the road and one at home). Also, of those six victories, four have come on Marian’s home ice and two on the road. Marian has an almost 2.5 goals per game edge, with the average score of their eight meetings 5.75-3.4. Their offensive production is better at home as well as they are averaging 6.6 goals per game against 4.3 on the road. However, Marquette is the opposite with their goals per game going up from 2.7 at home to 3.8 on the road.
So far this season, over six divisional games, Marquette is averaging 4 goals per game to 4.5 goals against, giving them a -3 goal differential. Marian has also played six games and are averaging 3.7 goals per game to 5.2 goals against, leading to a -9 goal differential.
It has been over a month since Marquette was embroiled in game action. When they last were on the ice the weekend of December 1st it did not end well as they were swept by DePaul. Marian has the advantage of having played in the Lindenwood Winter Classic last weekend and are coming off a victory over #2 Concordia University WI in a non-league game. As the conference tournament nears both teams will want to maximize their seeding so victories will help the cause. Marquette will also be looking to get the taste of victory back after such a long layoff and hope there aren’t many cobwebs. Marian has had the upper hand for most of this series and will be looking for that to continue, however, Marquette did come out victorious in their last meeting.
