The top spot in the Black Division is no longer in doubt and second place is the next up for grabs. Taking first place, in a repeat performance, is #4 Concordia University WI after they swept #11 DePaul University. The four point weekend pushed CUW’s point total to 17 and none of the other five teams in the division have a max point total that can eclipse it.
In the Black Division’s second weekend series Aurora University broke themselves out of a two way tie for third place with their sweep of UW Oshkosh. With the four points Aurora was also able to leapfrog Marian University and they now is alone in second place.
Roosevelt won the lone contest in the Orange Division. The victory moved Roosevelt up into second place, two points clear of Milwaukee School of Engineering.
In non-conference action, UW Milwaukee was swept by 2024-25 incoming NCHL member Purdue University NW.
ACHA Ranking #4 has three NCHL teams inside the top 20. CUW continues to lead the way and are ranked 4th, they are followed by DePaul at #11 and Marquette at #19.
#4 CUW sweeps #11 DePaul University, secures 1st place in the Black Division:
#4 Concordia University WI had the good fortune to start off the series with #11 DePaul University in the welcoming confines of the Ozaukee Ice Center. It only took 6:22 before the home team took the lead. Scoring for CUW was Garrett Wilderman, assisted by Ian Malcolmson and Lucas Kreuser. Just over seven minutes later Malcolmson lit the lamp to put CUW up by two, credited with assists were Jaxson Hill and Wilderman. Lukas Theodosopoulos found his way to the penalty box on a hooking call at 15:58. On the ensuing CUW powerplay Malcolmson tallied his second goal of the game at 16:23, credited with an assist was Wilderman.
The second period started with CUW holding a 3-0 lead. As the clock registered three minutes having elapsed Trenton Sherman, assisted by Thomas Cassel and John Swiatek, put a fourth CUW goal on the scoreboard. Sherman found the back of the net once again 2:49 later, assisted by EJ Halleck, increasing the CUW advantage to five. The DePaul powerplay was on the ice for the second time in the game after Wilderman was whistled for a tripping penalty at 9:52. Unlike their first opportunity, the DePaul powerplay unit came through. Scoring the powerplay goal was Danny Mannarino, assisted by Chris Lee and Michael Helf, at 10:22. Wilderman would atone for his penalty with a powerplay goal at 11:41, assisted by Easton Williams and Malcolmson, to make the score 6-1. The CUW powerplay unit stayed busy and at 12:43 Malcolmson completed his hat trick, credited with assists were Wilderman and Kreuser.
CUW’s offense kept clicking as they entered the third period and at 3:28 Wilderman also completed his hat trick, assisting were Kreuser and Malcolmson. Special teams came through for CUW at 10:13 as the powerplay unit put them up 9-1. Scoring the powerplay goal was Kreuser, assisted by Rex Staudacher and Malcolmson. Kreuser finished the game’s scoring at 18:10, assisted by Wilderman and Malcolmson.
Ian Robertson took the victory in a 28 save effort while Alexander Grzbek was credited with the loss, stopping 23 of 28 shot in 25:49 of ice time. Asher Motew, in 34:11 of relief, stopped 30 of 35 shots.
Coming off a 10-1 defeat in game one DePaul wanted to give the home fans something to get behind in game two. They were able to do just that when Lukas Theodosopoulos put home the game’s first goal at 7:12 of the first period, credited with assists were Ryan Plotke and Brock Ash. However, the lead would only last 2:16 before Thomas Cassel, assisted by Kreuser, knotted the game at one.
After an almost 18 minute goal drought, Malcolmson put CUW up 2-1 at 7:20 of the second period, credited with an assist was Wilderman. DePaul kept fighting and at 15:35 Matt Newton, assisted by Plotke and Andrew Gnospelius, pulled DePaul back even.
Dominic Falcone, assisted by Williams, broke the tie for good with his goal for CUW 3:39 into the final stanza. Owen Almburg’s goal 1:40 later, assisted by Wilderman, put CUW up 4-2. In an attempt to find a way to get back to a tie game DePaul pulled their goaltender, Motew, for the extra attacker. Fourteen seconds after Motew left the ice, Malcolmson sealed the game with an empty net goal, credited with an assist was Staudacher.
For the victorious CUW, Vincent Falcone stopped 41 of 43 DePaul shots on net. In a losing effort, Motew turned back 63 of the 67 shots he faced.
Aurora University takes both games against UW Oshkosh:
Joe Costello, assisted by Jack Pomillo and Cameron Andrees, got the scoring started in game one, giving Aurora University the lead at 4:21. It would take just over 10 minutes before the next puck crossed the goal line and again it came off of the stick of Costello, credited with assists were Pomillo and Brandon Alesia, at 14:34. Aurora increased their lead to three at the 16:09 mark when Tyler Heinz, assisted by Justin Lebouef and Alex Lieberman, hit pay dirt.
Five minutes and 47 seconds into the second period Andrees gave Aurora a four goal advantage. Only 26 seconds later UW Oshkosh was able to break the shutout and get back within three. Scoring for UWO was Lukas McGillivray, assisted by Jarrett Buchholz. The Aurora lead shrank to two at the 9:12 mark as Trent Bachman found the back of the net, credited with an assist was Chase Hunter.
UWO entered the third period with momentum on their side, having scored two unanswered goals to close out the second period. The pendulum would swing back in the favor of Aurora at 7:17 when Heinz, assisted by Andrees, netted his second goal of the game to put Aurora up 5-2. After assisting on two earlier goals, Pomillo tickled the twine at 9:42 to give Aurora a four goal lead once again. Two UWO penalties, one at 14:48 and the other at 16:00 gave Aurora a 5-on-3 advantage. They would only need 20 seconds for the powerplay unit to complete their mission. Scoring their seventh goal of the night, and games final goal, was Heinz, completing the hat trick, with assists to Tyler Schneeweis and Lebouef.
Skyler Coard took the victory for Aurora while Evan Hedtke absorbed the defeat for UWO.
UWO looked to bounce back in game two and had two powerplay opportunities in the opening stanza they were not able to convert. The game’s first goal would not be registered until there was 3:10 left in the second period. That honor went to Tom McGee of Aurora while on the penalty kill, credited with an assist was Heinz.
The score was still 1-0 in favor of Aurora when their powerplay unit was presented another 5-on-3 opportunity. As in game one, they would find the back of the net. Putting Aurora up by two, at 7:06 of the third period, was Schneeweis, assisted by Heinz and Costello. With 43 seconds left in the five minute major, assessed to Tim L’Huillier, the Aurora powerplay unit struck again to make the score 3-0. Scoring for Aurora was Brandon Alesia, assisted by Costello and Jonah Hart. UWO was not able to break onto the scoreboard and Aurora completed the series sweep with a 3-0 victory.
Coard picked up win two on the weekend and Hedtke took the loss for the second straight game.
Roosevelt University defeats Lewis University:
As of press time, the game sheets had not been posted for a more detailed account of the 6-4 Roosevelt University victory.
Non-Conference Games:
UW Milwaukee was swept by Purdue University NW, losing 5-2 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday.
