Monarchs Win Series After Consistent Hitting and Pitching on Thursday Night
Garrett Pog - 7/6/23
A brisk wind passed over Lake Trust Stadium on Thursday night as it had been accomplished. What is “it,” you may ask? The Michigan Monarchs (7-14) had finally won their first series in over 2 weeks.
After some weeks of turmoil where there were only 13 total players to work with, it felt like a breath of fresh air to see Kelton Caldwell on the sideline for Wednesday’s doubleheader. After splitting those games against the Sandusky Ice Haulers (13-10), Thursday night was all business. It was time for the Monarchs to show some resiliency.
They did just that, as starter Jake Wohlfert and All-Star Quin Konuszewski only gave up one run each, and a collective 9 hits was enough for the Monarchs to win 3-2 over the Ice Haulers. Avery Thielman subbed in the bottom of the 8th inning to collect his first save of the season, displaying his 2-way prowess.
Though it was a collective effort, Jonah St. Antoine was the standout player after scoring 2 runs, one of which came off an error by pitcher Robert Perebzak, followed by 2 stolen bases during the next two at-bats in the bottom of the 6th to win the game. His statline finished 1-for-3 with a walk.
Sam Seidel led the Ice Haulers in hits, collecting 2 in 4 at-bats, with a walk and a run scored as well. Robert Perebzak lost the game on an unearned run.
There’s plenty of baseball left to go, so the Monarchs are not done yet. They will face the Royal Oak Leprechauns tonight in Howell as the first of a home-away-home series, starting at 7:05 at Lake Trust Stadium.
