All-Star Defenseman Kornilov Returns for Final Season

Date:  Source: New Tecumseth Civics

The New Tecumseth Civics are very proud to announce they have resigned franchise defenseman Mikhail Kornilov to the 2021-2022 roster for his 6thy and final season of junior hockey.

Kornilov, the 6’1” St Petersburg native, was on a red hot start to the season last year with 5 points (including 4 goals) in only 2 games before the season was cut short due to the pandemic.

The season prior he was a workhorse on a talented blue line for the Civics. As he has shown for five seasons now he was able to not only keep up but lead by example for his older defensive partners throughout the season on route to winning his second defenseman of the year award when the Civics team awards were announced following the playoffs.

That Season Kornilov set a Career high in points and was a point per game player for the first time in his career. In 30 games Kornilov had 37 Points leading Civics Defenseman and finishing 3rd on the team. 10 of those were goals while he had 27 Assists. He also added 4 Power Play Goals and 3 Game Winners. Those numbers had him among the best of the best league wide:

14th in scoring among Russian Born Players (3rd among Russian Defensemen)

12th in scoring among Defensemen (5th in North Division)

24th in scoring among all U20 born players (4th in category amongst defensemen)

In 2019-2020 Kornilov appeared in 40 of the Civics 42 games pacing team defenseman in Goals (11), and Points (34) while finishing second in Assists (23).

Kornilov played for the Civics in their inaugural season as well when he was a rookie and one of the youngest players in the league but the 2000 born Kornilov took leaps and strides this year to finish off the season as one of the Civics best defenseman. The youngest assistant captain in team history upped his point total as a defenseman from 3 his first year to 24 his second to 34 this year and would continue to develop as a reliable shutdown defenseman. He led the team in power play goals with 5 and scored the game winner in two different shootouts for the Civics. Kornilov would peak on the GMHL player power rankings at number 20 for North Division skaters

Kornilov also spent time playing for the Everest Academy PSHF Team where he played against elite level Prep School talent and added almost a point every other game for the squad. Kornilov is a product of the Serebryanye Lvy Program having played for the U16 team the season prior to joining the Civics.

Kornilov has cherished the the opportunity the Civics have given him to grow up and develop in New Tecumseth and is excited to be back and looking forward to being back with his teammates again, “ I am excited to be coming back to the Civics for my last season of junior hockey. The team has done so much for me and has allowed me to develop into a player that has all the tools to be successful at the next level. It was an easy decision to return to work with the team and the staff and I am looking forward to taking care of unfinished business next season.”

The Civics and Kornilov both have reason to be excited with this re-signing as Kornilov will come back to a team and system he is familiar with and has excelled in and the Civics regain the defenseman who has developed into an elite player and a special teams weapon quarterbacking the New Tecumseth power play.

Civics General Manager Jordan Richardson (Who has been with Kornilov since the Civics re-branded 6 years ago) was very excited to have him re-joining the team, “When you think of Civics hockey, you think of Mikhail Kornilov. He has been a huge part of every team he has been on since his rookie year and it has been an absolute pleasure watching him grow into the player and person he has become. There is not a doubt in my mind that our success this season will be tied to the performance of Korn and that he will be recognized league wide as one of the most complete defenseman in the history of the GMHL. Proud to be welcoming him back to lead our squad.”

We in New Tecumseth are very pleased to be welcoming you back for this final year Mikhail. Your play on the ice speaks for itself and we are looking forward to seeing you further establish yourself as one of the truly elite defenseman in this league, from all of us in Civic Nation, Welcome Back Mikhail.
