When it comes to the Hastings Sodbusters, Trey Kissack has put his name firmly on the roster. The Sodbusters came to Hastings in 2018 and since then Kissack has been on the roster each summer.

The Grand Island native is known for his strikeouts. His first season in Hastings, he won the Expedition League Pitcher of the Year award with a 2.73 ERA and 81 strikeouts. He followed that season by recording a 2.47 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 2019.

“I love being in Hastings. I’ve always had a ton of fun out here,” Kissack said. “We get at it. We work hard. All of us teammates really bond together. It’s just a great time. I really wanted to come back.”

Before the summer, Kissack was poised for a big role on the Nebraska baseball team. He made six relief appearances which was tied for the most on the team. Through 15 games at Nebraska, Kissack had a 1.42 ERA, 5 strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work .

After the NCAA shut down the season, Kissack did not have the best set up to practice his game.

“I didn’t have a mound. I was able to throw. Play catch with my brother but I wasn’t able to get off of a mound and really get to work,” he said. “In terms of just being on a mound. While some guys had a mound and had a weight room open to them. So everybody is at a different spot. So we’re just all going to catch back up.”

With baseball back in his life after nearly three months, Kissack is not taking the small things for granted.

“Just being around people. This is kind of for everybody but we’ve all been stuck in our houses for two months. More specifically to baseball, being in the dugout with guys. Being in the bullpen cheering each other on,” Kissack said. “As pitchers, most pitchers will learn the most from other pitchers. So, being around a new set of pitchers and getting work in, ‘Hey, how do you throw this pitch? How do you throw that pitch?’ Just really developing that way.”

Kissack is no longer stuck in house but back inside the brick walls of Duncan Field, taking the mound with strikeouts not too far behind.
