The Bantam Minor Black Sox participated in a four-game set in Sudbury this past weekend, June 1st-2nd.
Game one featured a matchup between the Sox and the Valley East Voyageurs. Despite a strong outing from Connor Bruzas on the mound, the Sox dropped the weekend opener by a score of 9 to 7. Bruzas picked up a no-decision, surrendering 0 earned runs while striking out 5.
Game two pitted the Sox against the Muskoka Hornets. A strong hitting performance helped the Sox cruise to a 12-4 victory. Wes Pomeroy led the offense with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. Nolan Toni and Cole Masse also added with doubles of their own. Bruzas went 2 for 2 on the night, picking up 4 steals.
The third game of the weekend featured the Sox taking a 6-5 victory against the Hornets. Jayce Prgomet took the win on the mound while Michael Hapanovich provided 2 hits.
The weekend concluded with a chance for the Sox to even their season series with Valley East. Cole Masse took the mound for the Sox, going 3 scoreless innings while striking out 6. This was enough to propel the Sox to an 8-5 victory. Wes Pomeroy picked up the save in relief, mixing in his change-up to induce weak contact from the opposing hitters. Masse and Ty Beaupre each added a pair of hits, while Carmine Perna drove in two RBIs.
“Our coaching staff is pleased with our balanced progress in all areas. Our pitching and defence are definitely coming along,” said assistant coach Paul Hapanovich. Paul, a former Black Sox first baseman, is preparing for an upcoming tournament in Gaylord, Michigan.
“We need to do a little bit of everything. The goal is to head into the weekend on a positive note.”
Next action for the u14 Bantam Minor Sox will be in Gaylord, Michigan on June 8th.
The Sox record now sits at 6-2 on the season.
