NEW WEBSITE FOR 2023
Date: Apr 19, 2023
Over a decade ago, the Blazers (back then they were called the Bobcats) faced off against the Cowichan River Rats. They haven’t crossed paths since – until last night. Blazer Nation was looking forward to a new challenge, and facing a team they’d heard had no shortage of depth and talent. The Blazers responded to the challenge well, managing to get a 2019 Blazers record 13 runners out to Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt. The good guys played their best game of the year, led by a season-best performance from former VSLL Top Goaltender Rob Wood, who turned aside 24 of 25 shots.
“That game was a heck of a lot closer than the final score suggests,” said the well-known actor and Blazers super fan, Spokane’s own Craig T. Nelson. (Nelson won an Emmy Award as Coach Hayden Fox on the ‘90s TV series ‘Coach’, and appeared in some of the greatest films ever made, including the 1989 Tom Hanks buddy cop mega-hit ‘Turner & Hooch’.) “The Rats just couldn’t solve Wood. One of those nights,” Nelson added. “The Blazers did look like the better team, but it could’ve just as soon been a 7-5 game. I’m looking forward to the rematch – I hear the Rats were missing some of their top talent. BC Transit runs out there too, so I'll be able to watch. Pretty sweet. The buses don't run that late though, so it might be tricky getting home. You don't have to worry about that though. God, I love taking the bus.”
The Blazers have a bit of a break in the schedule now, returning to action against their rivals the Jokers next Thursday May 23, 9:00 pm at Archie Browning Sports Centre in Esquimalt. Admission is free, so come check it out! And we’d love it if you considered “going green” on your way to the rink – which is easily accessible via a major bus route, bicycle lanes, or bring some friends and carpool!
Have a great long weekend, gang!
