Last night was the final game of the 2022 Vancouver Island Lacrosse League regular season, as the playoffs kick off next week. The Blazers opened the season with a whimper, falling 8-4 to the defending champion Cowichan Rats, but they ended the year on a dominant high note, hanging an 18-0 score on their rivals the Victoria Jokers.

Leading the push for the dudes was red hot Kelowna import Andrew McMillan, who potted 5 goals and 4 assists. Saanich Express goaltender Darian Claxton was perfect in his appearance for the Blazers, turning aside all of the 21 shots he faced for a rare box lacrosse shutout. The Blazers defence also came up big, with team spark plug Robbie Baldwin added 2 big goals from the defensive end, assistant captain Lorne Sam notching a goal, as well as veteran star defender Tory Spiteri.
 

Arena officials roughly estimated game attendance numbers somehwere below 400 fans out watching the good guys. Spotted in the celeb section was island native and Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Nelly Furtado, the hit recording artist whose 2000 pop/worldbeat debut album 'Whoa, Nelly!' went double-platinum in the US and 4x platinum in Canada. When asked to comment on the state of the Blazers and the playoff road that lies ahead, Nelly replied, “Have you heard my song 'Turn Off The Light'? It goes like this... They say that girl ya know she act too tough, tough, tough. Well it's 'til I turn off the light, turn off the light. They say that girl you know she act so rough, rough, rough. Well it's 'til I turn off the light, turn off the light. And I say follow me follow me follow me down down down down. 'Til you see all my dreams. Not everything in this magical world is quite what it seems.”
 

I'm not sure what she meant by all of that, but maybe it had something to do with the top teams acting tough and rough, but when you turn off the light, and when you see the Blazers' dreams, you'll see there is a lot still to be learned in terms of how these teams can perform in the playoffs when they have their rosters organized and they've had a season of preparation under their belt. If that's what she meant, I agree.
