One week left in the Vancouver Island Lacrosse league regular season. The Blazers have work to do. They need to wrap the season with some wins, and get their game tuned up to do some damage in the playoffs. Last night they faced the talent laden Westshore Aces, who have continued to build their roster with skilled players since their difficult start to the season. It was a tight race for 60 minutes, with the Dudes With Good Attitudes™ holding an early 3-2 league, only to see the Aces score a couple big goals including a deflating short handed marker to hold a 4-3 lead of their own deep into the third period. Thankfully Blazers veteran star goaltender Rob Wood held the fort, refusing to allow the Aces to widen their league despite numerous third period chances down the stretch. Then, star Kelowna import Pat McMillan got to work, first scoring an even strength marker to knot the game at 4-4. Then, with the Blazers buzzing, the Westshore Aces took a too-many-men penalty with only seconds left in the game, which by the letter of the law awarded the Blazers a penalty shot. Pat McMillan took the shot, and Pat McMillan did not miss. 5-4 for the good guys.

Estimates pegged attendance numbers at somewhere below 400 fans out watching the good guys. Overheard in the bleachers - “Word around the league is funds were available for teams to all get new uniforms this year, but not all of the teams got their act together in time. This set the Blazers got is unreal. Easily the best in the league.” Another fan responded, “I hate them. I think they look terrible.” A third chimed in, “Pretty sure that's the idea. I think they're hilarious.”

Spotted in the celebrity section was former 'The Mummy' and 'Encino Man' star Brendan Fraser. When asked to comment on the Blazers effort, Fraser replied, "These guys need to find a way to polish things up offensively. I think their power play finished a -1 with a short handed goal against, despite getting a few extra looks on PP. Transition to offense was a little rough too, turning balls over on their way out of the zone. I think a lot of that could be chalked up to fatigue, as the offense didn't sustain possession very much. Numerous shot clock violations, shots wide leading to rushes the other way, or turnovers in the offensive end out wide along the boards. Hopefully much of that gets cleaned up as the squad continues to get healthy. I know when I was in 'Blast From The Past' and 'George of the Jungle', we really relied on the entire cast to make those movies as good as they are. It couldn't just be one or two of us carrying the scenes. A total team effort was needed. Hopefully the Blazers can get that same kind of energy going as they head into the high stakes gamess next week."

The dudes return to action tomorrow, Thursday June 30, when they take on their historic rival the Victoria Jokers.
