The Civics are proud to announce the return of last year’s Captain Matt Senra, who has been re-signed for his final season of junior hockey during the upcoming 2019-2020 season.

Senra, the 2018-2019 GMHL All-Star is returning after setting career highs across the board including Goals (18), Assists (34), Points (52) and Star Points (13) while captaining the Civics to a 24-15-3 season including a stretch of 11-1 hockey after Senra returned from the All-Star Game in early January.

Senra took major strides entering year 2 with the Civics and was a difference maker not only on offense, where he was the teams 4th leading scorer, but also on the defensive end where he continuously showed his dedication to being the first man back and making plays in his own zone whether it be winning battles, proper cycling or blocking shots, Senra could be counted on to do it all.

Senra will once again be counted on in a leadership role this season having proved his effectiveness as a member of the Civics leadership group providing an outstanding example for his teammates to follow both on and off the ice.

In 2017-2018 at almost a point per game Senra was the second leading scorer on that year’s Civics squad. Senra played as a high energy guy who was a very versatile player, he scored 37 Points (17G, 20A) in his debut junior hockey season playing in 40 games. Senra was consistently vocal in the room and on the ice and also found himself recognized in the GMHL power rankings where he was ranked a #37 in the Northern Division at one point.

Senra was named an assistant captain of the team halfway through that year, a testament to the type of player he was coming into training camp and the beginning of last season as a relative unknown prospect. Senra was among the best on the team last season at playing both ways and getting into the “dirty areas” on the ice that grit, drive, and determination what put Senra on the radar of the Civics staff in the first place when a former scout was coaching the Arsenal Hockey Club summer team where Senra impressed putting up 8 Points (2G, 6A) in 13 games with the competitive squad.

Civics GM and Head Coach Dennis Martindale praised Senra saying, “ As a coach you like to see certain things from your players that help the team the team succeed, Sens has all of those qualities. He pays attention to the details, he works as hard in the d-zone as he does in the offensive zone, he kills penalties, he puts up offense for us and he’s a great leader who is easy to coach. So we are very happy to have him return for another season to help us attain our goal.”

Senra, 5’8”, is a graduate of the Brampton 45’s AA program where he played until the season before last when he joined the Goulding Park Rangers U21AAA team competing in the GTHL.

Senra was very excited to be returning to the Civics and can’t wait to return to his second family, “The Decision to come back to New Tec was easy, to hear that the coaching and management staff was saying the same, along with the group of returning guys is what really put the pen to paper. Dennis is truly a player’s coach and understands what needs to be done to win, the atmosphere provided at practice is what I look forward to most as it continues to improve myself and my teammate’s skill. There is no other place I’d rather be for my last year of junior hockey.”

You have laid it all out on the line for the past two seasons and we couldn’t be more proud Matthew and we hope that you can end of your junior hockey career by bringing a Russell Cup to Civic Nation!
