Women's D-II National Championships Semifinal Recap

Game One of the semifinals of the ACHA Women’s Division II National Championships started out Saturday morning with (1W) Minot State University defeating (1E) Bishops University 6-2 at the Children’s Health StarCenter McKinney. Minot State’s BethAnn Goudy led the Beavers in scoring recording three points (2g, 1a) for the night. Goudy led things off for Minot State with her first goal midway into the opening period before Haley Wickham, who also tallied two goals for the day, gave the Beavers a 2-0 heading into the second period. Goudy gave the Beavers a 3-0 lead just 5:48 in the second with an unassisted power-play goal before assisting on Vanessa Grimstad’s goal nearly two minutes later. Bishops’ Jessica Belanger stopped Minot netminder Shelby Tornato’s shutout bid with an unassisted power-play goal just 1:26 into the third period before bringing the Gaiters within two with nearly 13 minutes remaining in the game. Minot’s Grimstad stopped any type of comeback for Bishop’s assisting on two power-play goals at 17:49 and 18:21 respectively and allowing the Beavers a second straight chance to capture the ACHA national title on Sunday.

Game Two of the semifinals of the ACHA Women’s Division II National Championships finished with (2W) Assiniboine College coming back to defeat the back-to-back defending champion Lakehead University (3W) with a 2-1 score Saturday at at the Children’s Health StarCenter McKinney.  After a scoreless first period, Lakehead’s Kayla Eteni scored the game’s first goal with just over five minutes to play in the middle frame. Sophomore Simone Turner Cummer would take things into her own hands scoring a pair of goals in the third. Cummer tied the game during a 4-on-4 with a Jasmin Denby assist at 8:19. Then, with under six minutes remaining, Cummer scored the game-winner as Sam Christensen assisted to punch their ticket to their first ACHA National Championship game.

Minot State (1W) will face (2W) Assiniboine College Sunday, March 30, in the Women’s D-II National Championship at the Comerica Center  tomorrow at noon Central.
