ACHA CANCELS 2020 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

Florida Gulf Coast University are back-to back ACHA Men’s Division II National Champions after defeating Northeastern University 3-1 Tuesday evening at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. Goaltender Jordan Bustard stopped 25 of 26 Northeastern shots to earn the MVP honors and David Wong, Dylan Cantwell and Brandon Beard each tallied two points (1g, 1a) to help FGCU clinch its fourth national championship in its 16th season of existence.
Playing their fifth game in as many days, FGCU showed no signs of slowing scoring two goals in the opening period. Beard punched one in just 4:55 in before Wong gave the Eagles a two-goal cushion with 4:29 remaining in the first.
With 2:14 remaining in the second period, Cantwell gave FGCU a 3-0 lead with his shot going past Northeastern netminder Nicholas Kamm’s left shoulder.
Northeastern’s Mateusz Koziel attempted to start the Huskies comeback bid scoring just 1:06 into the final frame, but Northeastern cold not find the net the remainder of the game.
FGCU’s championship is their third title in four years and fourth in last eight years.
