ACHA CANCELS 2020 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

Day four, the Semifinals, of the ACHA Men’s Division II National Championships started with Northeastern University waiting till the final seconds to defeat University of Massachusetts-Amherst 2-1 and advance to the Finals. After two scoreless periods, Northeastern struck first on a shorthanded goal by Nathan Cunningham at 7:35 in the third period. Dennis Achkinazi countered 17 seconds later to knot the game back up for UMass-Amherst. Just when it was looking like the game was going into overtime, Northeastern’s Mateusz Koziel found the back of the net with 56 seconds remaining.

Game two of the semifinals had the defending ACHA Men’s D-II Champions Florida Gulf Coast University capture the chance to become national champions for the second straight year as they defeated the University of Cincinnati 3-2 Monday night at the Comerica Center. Keaton Arkeilpane and Trevor Mulaly each led the Eagles tallying two points. After a scoreless first period, the two assisted on Shawn O’Meara’s goal nearly seven minutes into the period. Arkeilpane gave Florida a 2-0 lead midway in before Cincinnati’s Brandon Armstrong scored a power-play goal with less than five minutes remaining in the second period to bring the Bearcats within one at 2-1. Florida quickly regained their two-goal lead just 1:23 into the final frame before Cincinnati responded back within a minute later. The Eagles will seek to capture their fourth ACHA Men’s D-II title, and third in four years, Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Comerica Center.
