Day 4 Recap: Men’s D-I National Championships

Day four, the Quarterfinals, of the ACHA Men’s Division I National Championships started out with four-time ACHA National Champion runner-up Iowa State University defeating four-time ACHA Champions Ohio University in the morning game at Comerica Center Sunday. Tony Uglem led Iowa State with two goals. After a scoreless first period, Ohio jumped on the board first as both teams traded goal for goal in the second period. Uglem’s second goal at the six minute mark proved to be the game winner to help the Cyclones advance.

Game 2 saw the 2013 ACHA Men’s D-I Champion Minot State University defeat Adrian College 3-2 the Comerica Center and end Adrian’s quest to repeat as ACHA Champions.  The defending ACHA Champion scored the game’s first goal in the opening period. After a scoreless second, Minot State scored three goals at the midway mark of the third, and the first two being 1:30 apart. Adrian’s Rainer Glimpel brought the Bulldogs within one at 11:49 in the period but the Beavers held off any chance of any equalizer.

Game 3 of the Quarterfinals had University of Michigan-Dearborn (#10) upset No.7 seed Davenport University 6-4 at the Comerica Center.  Tyler Groat tallied three points (2G+1A) and Billy Brock garner a pair of assists to lead Michigan to the Frozen Four.  Michigan jumped to an early lead scoring two goals in the first period before Davenport answered back with two goals in the second period. The third period saw a total of six goals. Michigan and Davenport each traded goals early to bring the score to 3-3. Michigan would jump to a two-goal lead with 1:20 remaining before Davenport’s Austin Thompson punched in a power-play goal (extra attacker) to bring the Panthers within one at 19:08. John Ames solidified the win, eliminating Davenport’s comeback bid with an empty-net goal with 11 seconds remaining.

Capping the final quarterfinal game of the day saw Lindenwood University fend off Liberty University 4-3 Sunday at Comerica Center.  After falling behind early in the first period, Lindenwood responded with two goals of their own before jumping to a comfortable 4-1 lead after two periods.  In the final frame, Liberty would start an impressive comeback bid scoring two goals in under a minute with 9:15 remaining in the game. However, Lindenwood netminder Cooper Seedott would fend off all remaining shots on goal to preserve the win.
