MIHL Announces 2019 David Mannino Scholarship Recipient

The Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) is pleased to announce Joseph Weise from Woodhaven High School as the 2019 recipient of the David Mannino College Scholarship associated with the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.  The $2,000 college scholarship is awarded to a student-athlete who participated in the 2019 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase and meets the selection criteria. Joseph was selected by a random draw of qualifying senior players and the award was presented to him on Saturday, February 3, 2019.  The scholarship will be applied to Joseph’s tuition for the 2019-2020 academic year or for his first year of college.

Joseph commented on winning the award, “First of all I want to thank the Mannino family and the MIHL for presenting me with such an award. I am honored to be the recipient of a scholarship that represents the accomplishments of such a great individual. I would like to thank my parents for always being there for me and being very supportive of the decisions that I make. I also want to thank them for all the time and money that they dedicated to me over the years for not just hockey, but for life in general. I would like to thank my coaches for trusting in me and giving me the opportunity to play over the last 3 years

Joseph, the son of Paula and Rob Weise maintains a 3.80 GPA at Woodhaven High School.   His college choice is undetermined at this point with University of Michigan – Dearborn and junior hockey in the mix.  Joseph fulfilled the community service requirement for the award by volunteering at KWI – Kids against Hunger and KWI – Motts Auction Fundraiser Ann Arbor.

Woodhaven High School Head Coach Bryan Sullivan talked about Joseph and the Mannino Scholarship, “Joseph Weise was very honored to receive the Mannino Scholarship; he is an outstanding young man that represents himself, his family, our school, our program along with the whole Woodhaven Community with the character that one can only hope all would try to live up to.  Joseph has the character, drive and self-motivation to be very successful at whatever he put his mind to accomplish."

"The MIHL showcase is an outstanding experience for all who participate, we appreciate the opportunity awarded to be a part of such a prestigious event, he added. On behalf of the entire Woodhaven hockey family I would like to thank Dr. Mannino and the MIHL for making this a possibility and for the work both do to help high school players both on and off the ice.”

The winning of the award just added to the great time Joseph and his teammates had at the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase, “This year at the MIHL showcase, I felt that overall my team had a good experience, even though the results did not show it. We faced some very good competition in Salem and Saline, which was what we needed at that point in the season. It was cool to watch some of the other teams from around the state that we don’t normally play or see too often.”

To honor the life of David Mannino, the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) renamed the MIHL Showcase Scholarship – It is now the David Mannino Scholarship and is awarded annually during the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.  The decision to rename the scholarships in David’s name came easily, “David’s life exemplified the goals and objectives of the scholarship – he was a student athlete and a young man with great moral character”, explained MIHL President Andy Weidenbach.
