Trenton High School—Mike Turner to be inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Mt. Pleasant MI, May 12, 2021—The Michigan High School Coaches’ Association (MHSCA) has selected Mr. Michael Turner from Trenton High School for induction into the Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place in the Terrace Room of the Bovee University Center on the campus of Central Michigan Uni-versity at 1:00pm on September 19, 2021. Tickets to attend the event will be available on June 1, 2021 on the MHSCA.org website.

 

Michael Turner has accumulated thirty-one years as a hockey coach. He began his career in in 1972 at Southgate Aquinas where he coached for one year. Then from 1973-1981 and 1994-2014, he was the head hockey coach at Trenton High School. During this time his teams earned a record of 629-126-52. His teams have held the state record for the most wins in hockey since 2014. In addition Coach Turner’s teams have been State Champions eleven times, State Runners Up four times, and Regional Champions twenty times. During his career he also provided an avenue for over 40 players to advance to the next level of junior hock-ey, with at least 35 playing collegiate hockey and 6 at the professional level. In addition, four of Coach Turner’s players were named Mr. Hockey for the MHSHCA. Coach Turner also coached varsity golf and JV softball for Trenton High School from 1973-1981, and from 1981-1983 served as an assistant hockey coach at the University of Michigan.

 

Michael Turner has received many well deserved honors over his coaching career. He has been named MHSHCA Coach of the Year four times, NHSACA Coach of the Year Finalist three times, NHSACA Coach of the Year, NFHSCA Section 4 Finalist, NFHSCA State Coach of the Year, USA Today National HS Hock-ey Coach of the Year, and was inducted into the Trenton Hall of Fame, the MHSHCA Hall of Fame. He also coached “Replay the Series Hockey Game – Trenton vs Catholic Central.” This was a tied game in 1999, resumed 11 years later in 2010 and was shown nationally by Fox Sports. Scotty Bowman was the honorary coach of the Catholic Central team, and Brendan Shanahan was the honorary coach of the Trenton Team. Hockey and Red Wing great, Gordie Howe dropped the opening game puck.

 

Coach Turner has been an active member in many different hockey associations serving 5 years on the MHSAA Hockey Planning Committee, the MHSAA Rules Committee, the MHSHCA Seeding Committee, and was President of the Michigan Metro League for three years. He is respected in the hockey community for his knowledge of the sport, for the way he works with his players - bringing out the best in them, and for the respect his players have for him. He is known for his coaching mottos: “Never underestimate the heart of a Trenton Trojan” and “Most teams play for a good season. At Trenton we play for Championships!”
