Braehead Clan coach Pete Russell says latest signing Mac Howlett is one for the future after snapping up the British born teenager.

The 18-year-old is the 14th player on the Glasgow club’s roster and it’s a player Russell knows well having coached him in the past.

And the Clan coach is looking forward to helping him develop as he returns to the UK from a spell with Finnish side SaiPa.

“Mac’s a very talented player, great skater, very good hands and sees the ice well,” Russell said. “He loves the game and wants to be the best he can be, as well as do all he can.

“I’ve known Mac for a long time and he was part of the Okanagan Hockey Academy, where I coached, before moving to play for SaiPa in Finland for the past two years.

“He’s been developing in a great hockey nation and has grown in size which will only benefit his game.

“In Glasgow we must also build for the future and try to be step ahead. Mac is one of these steps we have to take and also be patient with him.

“It’s a great opportunity for him and I know he will make the most of it. Aside from playing hockey, Mac is going to be studying in Glasgow.

“He is long term committed to Glasgow and the Clan, and we are committed to developing Mac over the coming seasons.”

Howlett was also part of the Great Britain Under 20’s side that took a bronze medal in last year’s World Championships.

He’ll be wearing the number 20 jersey as part of Russell’s team when the new season begins in September.
