Manchester Storm coach Ryan Finnerty says he and his team feel “fortunate” to have returning forward Shane Bakker in their side.

The 30-year-old is back for a second season after agreeing terms and will continue in his number 79 jersey.

And Finnerty was pleased to have the Canadian back on board as Bakker’s return takes his roster to 11 for the new season.

“I’m excited to have Bakker back,” Finnerty said.  “He’s a popular figure in our team, and a great leader and he does so many of the little things that go unnoticed.

“We feel fortunate to have him as part of the club and we have to thank the University of Salford for their continued support.

“I’m looking forward to Shane enjoying his success both on and off the ice this season.”

Bakker joined the club last summer from ECHL outfit Atlanta Gladiators and made 53 appearances, scoring three times and assisting in 13 other goals.

He played a key role as Storm finished second in the league and won the Patton Conference in what was a successful season for them.

And Bakker says the winning mentality the team has is something he’s glad to be part of again going forward.

He said: “I couldn’t be more happy to be back in Manchester and last year, the rink was my favourite place to go to everyday.

“We had a great group of guys with a winning attitude, and that’s the kind of team I want to be a part of.”
