Van Horn Named 2017-18 Most Valuable Player

The University of Regina Cougars Women’s Softball team continue their hold of first place in the Western Collegiate Softball Association by adding 5 more wins to their record. With an impressive sweep of games at their home opener this past weekend in Regina. The Cougars are seeing the success of their hard work pay off. For the second time in a row they opened the weekend facing their rivals, the U of Saskatchewan, and were able to settle in after a few defensive errors to come out ahead with an 8-7 win. They defeated the U of Calgary 8-1 and ended the day with a 10-1 victory over Dawson College (Glendive, Montana) in 5 innings. The Cougars finished up the weekend with wins on Sunday beating Dawson College 11-2 and SAIT 12-1 in 4 innings.
Veteran Carmen Hughes of Regina was a force at the plate this weekend hitting two out of the park home runs and adding a few doubles and triples to help out the Cougars. Cougars also saw veteran outfielder Hayley Gibson’s bat come alive racking up some RBI’s, stolen bases and consistent outs in CF.
Second year player Candice VanHorn of Drums, Pennsylvania continues to lead the league with an impressive batting average of close to .800 as well as proving herself to be the top short stop in the league. New recruit Leslie Miller from Oklahoma University saw her first weekend of action with the Cougars and was impressive at the plate, on the mound and helping out at 1B.
The depth on the bench with the 1st and 2nd year players saw them play key roles offensively and defensively to help the Cougars with their wins this weekend. Mackenzie Roach of Virden, Manitoba played several different positions and saw some innings on the mound continuing to play an integral role in the Cougar line-up. The pitching staff shut the opposition down allowing them to score 8 earned runs in 18 innings of play. The Cougars hope to continue their winning streak this upcoming weekend in Calgary. Saturday, Sept 16 they take on SAIT at 9:30, U of Calgary at 2:00 and U of Saskatchewan at 5:30. They finish up the weekend with back to back games Sunday, Sept 17 at 10:00 am vs SAIT and 12:15 vs U of Calgary.
