West Virginia University rolls over University of Kentucky, 8-3


 

West Virginia University had a four-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to an 8-3 win over Kentucky.

 

Benjamin Monroe was all over the ice for West Virginia University, as he had two goals in the win. Monroe scored at 7:41 into the first period, sniping one top shelf on the power play, to make the score 1-0 West Virginia University and again while 7:16 into the second to make the score 3-1 West Virginia University.

Kentucky's power play was ineffective against West Virginia University's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

With 30 shots on target during the contest, West Virginia University pelted the Kentucky cage and West Virginia University's goal total was higher than its season average. West Virginia University averages 4.0 goals per game. West Virginia University could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 16 minutes in penalties during this rugged and physical game.

West Virginia University also got points from captain Sean Meyer, who also had one dazzling end to end rush to score his lone goal and one assist. West Virginia University also had goals scored by Matthew Strober, who had his second Hat Trick of the season and Matthew Epperly and Connor Breinich, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for M3-West Virginia University were Sebastian Dziadowicz, who had two, Tyler Richardson, who had three, and Kenneth Knoll, Brian Dickman, Jason Conroy, William Benincosa, and Ryan Agner, who contributed one each.

Kentucky excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

Kentucky was helped by Jack Mallett, who registered one goal. Mallett scored on the power play 5:35 into the second period to make the score 2-1 West Virginia University. Kentucky had gained a power play chance when Meyer was whistled for interference. Kentucky additionally got points from Ryan Hall, who also grabbed one goal and one assist.  Kentucky University of also got a goal from Beck Schultz as well.

 By firing 42 shots on goal,Kentucky kept Tim Brei busy.Timothy Brei rejected 39 shots on goal for West Virginia University.

Tucker Boyle recorded 22 saves for Kentucky. Kentucky incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.

WVU now awaits to see how the ACHA D3 rankings commitee feel about their 6-6 start in the first rankings period.
