Eden Prairie capped off a 5-0 record in sub state play with a 5-0 victory over Shakopee in the championship game Sunday afternoon. Eden Prairie was led by Charlie Sheehan’s complete game shutout. The shutout was a fitting end to a weekend in which Eden Prairie’s pitching staff allowed 3 runs in 39 innings pitched.
The tournament started off with an 11-1 win over Richfield. Mark Ehresman powered the way on the mound giving up 1 run in 6 innings. Offensively, it was a total team effort with eight of the starters recording hits. Then in day 2, EP squared off in a pitchers dual with Shakopee. Ryan Swanson led EP to a 2-1 victory, and Grant Kaufman earned the save. Swanson was in control early and often striking out 9 batters in 7 2/3 innings. EP scratched out 2 runs in the 2nd inning and Swanson made it hold up.
Day 3 saw Eden Prairie matched up with Chanhassen. EP came out with a 13-1 victory behind another great pitching performance by Trevor Divinski. The offense helped by scoring 10 in the first three innings, led by Tyler Safgren’s grand slam in the 3rd. With a spot secured on championship Sunday, Eden Prairie played Edina on day 4. EP came out victorious 10-0 behind a shutout by sophomore Jack Zigan. That led them to having to win one game on Sunday against Shakopee.
The team played really well all weekend outscoring their opponents 41-3. This was the best stretch of total team baseball we’ve had all season. Offensively, Defensively and pitching were all very good over the five days. Some of the key offensive contributors this week were Tyler Safgren, Josh Miller, Jeff Athey & Wes Young.
