Excelsior Senior Legion 2019 State Champions
Date: Sep 6, 2019
This past weekend, the Hopkins Flyers (Sr. Legion) and Hopkins Millers (Jr. Legion) of Post 320 Baseball jointly traveled to Fargo, ND, where they competed in the 43rd Annual Fargo-Moorhead Invitational. The teams left on Thursday, commuting out I-94W in a 56-passenger coach bus, and attended a Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks vs. St. Paul Saints game that same evening. The tournament began Friday morning, and it would prove to be a successful opening day for both teams, as the Flyers and Millers both swept double-headers. The Flyers posted wins over Team Manitoba (1-0) and Brandon Valley, SD (12-2), while the Millers defeated Team Manitoba (11-5) and Fargo (13-3). On day two, the Flyers dropped a morning game to Mitchell, SD (1-4), and lost its night game with Fargo due to rain and lightning, while the Millers posted a win against Regina Saskatchewan (13-3), and dropped a game to Andover, MN (1-0), completing pool play with a 3-1 record, and advancing to the Championship Game.
On Sunday, the Flyers defeated Andover, MN (6-1), and subsequently fell to the host team, Fargo Post 2, by a score of 8-6, after what was a very questionable Fargo grand slam home run call by the home plate umpire. As a result, the Flyers fell one game shy of advancing to the Championship Game, finishing with a 3-2 record on the weekend.
The Millers competed fiercely in a back-and-forth Championship Game, finally falling to Team Manitoba by a score of 10-8, completing what was a great week of baseball for Post 320 Baseball.
“It was a great weekend of ball for both of our ball clubs [Flyers and Millers], and there was some great team-building that took place. On top of playing some good baseball, I am very proud of our players for how they represented Post 320 Baseball on the road. We received several compliments from hotel and restaurant staff on how respectful and well-mannered our young men were throughout the weekend. That means the world to me,” said Flyers Head Coach, Todd Jahnke.
Millers Head Coach Jon Chhay went onto say, “It was great seeing the players grow into their own skin this weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed watching our guys build some strong team chemistry and camaraderie, and come together as a team.”
