Shootout loss gives Welland first point of season

The Welland Whalers collected their first point of the Allan Cup Hockey season, and the senior A team was 11:34 away from earning its first win.

The Stoney Creek Generals overcame a 3-1 deficit with three unanswered goals, including one in penalty shot overtime, for a 4-3 shootout win Saturday night at Welland Arena.

Stoney Creek beat Welland for the second time in as many starts to improve to 3-2 in its expansion season in the six-team league.

The Whalers fell to 0-3-0-1 despite outshooting the Generals 41-31, and having the edge in special team play. Welland finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play; Stoney Creek, 0-for-4.

John Williamson, Joe Forte and Kevin Floris found the back of the net for the Whalers who were playing before an announced crowd of 404 in their second home game of the season.

Welland also dropped a 4-3 decision to Stoney Creek when it opened the season at home Oct. 26.

Scott Croxal, Marcus Roberto and Kyle Zettler each netted a goal in regulation for the Generals, who outscored their hosts 2-0 in the shootout. Zettler and Nathan Pageau scored in the shootout for Stoney Creek, with Zettler getting record for the game winner, while Drew Minor and Williamson failed to score on Generals netminder Mark Servos when the game came down to penalty shots.

Welland was back on the ice Sunday night for its first game of the season against the Norwood Vipers, who were 1-2 heading into the home game.
