With the loss, Monsters fell to the Flyers in Overtime last night.  Niklas Giers scored the overtime winning goal, to lead the Valencia Flyers to a 5-4 regular season victory against the Fresno Monsters at Ice Station Valencia on Thursday.

We talked with defenseman Luke Richesin about the first game of the season and how the team feels going into tonight’s game.

First game of the regular season. How does the team feel?

“It’s all about getting the first game jitters out. The outcome obviously wasn’t what we wanted but as a team I feel we worked well together and our roles on the team have become well established.”

Valencia and Fresno have begun a fierce rivalry over the past few years. With the Monsters having to eliminate the Flyers from 2 of 3 Western Division Finals. What is the atmosphere like playing on their home ice?

“The atmosphere in Valencia last night was ecstatic. Going into game one at the start of the weekend, the team was excited. We’re playing our rival on their home opening weekend and we want to make a statement.”

What’s the goal for this weekend?

“Fight hard, come out of the weekend ahead, and get that first W in the column.”
