Training to be a Monster

As Tier II hockey players, fitness is a way of life for the Monsters hockey team. A key component for the players to get in game ready shape is through training with the team’s Strength and Conditioning Coach, Steve Sobonya.

Steve has been a Strength and Conditioning coach for 26 years. He completed his undergraduate schooling at Montana State where he received a BS in Exercise Science. His graduate degree (MS-Physiology of Exercise) was obtained at Fresno State. Along with his advanced degrees, Steve has multiple certifications that make him the top Strength and Conditioning coach in the Fresno Valley. He is certified in the Egoscue Method, MATT, USA Weightlifting, and by the NSCA. Before his transition to Fresno, Steve was the Strength and Conditioning assistant and Montana State. He started his strength and conditioning journey in the central valley in 1990 where he became the head S&C coach at Fresno State and did so for 10 years. On top of his already impressive resume, Steve has trained 27 Olympians, 11 of which received gold, and numerous draft picks.

The Monsters have been lucky enough to have Steve train our boys for the past three seasons. During the offseason, Steve creates training plans and diet plans for the athletes. During the season, they train 3-5 days a week at Sierra Athletic Club, which is just one of the facilities Steve uses to train his clients. We are so honored to work with such an amazing individual and value Steve’s impact in our athletes’ hockey career.
