Down 2-1 late in the third period, New England struck for three goals in a span of 87 seconds, including two power-play tallies, to take home the 2011 Elite Tournament title with a 4-2 win over Northeast.
A pair of penalty calls found Northeast down two men and it didn't take New England long to capitalize. Garnet Hathaway fired home the equalizer, off an assist from Connor Leen, with just 2:39 to play in regulation and his team enjoying a two-man advantage.
Still with the power play, New England forged ahead 3-2 just 22 seconds later as Connor Toomey banged home a goal-mouth feed from Hathaway. Defenseman Ryan Randall also assisted on the goal.
With 1:12 to play, defenseman Kevin Hart notched the all-important insurance tally for New England, assisted by Eric Neiley and Jacob Rutt.
Northeast had taken a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes remaining when Top Forward Award recipient and the Elite Tourney Scoring Champ Steve Buco pounced on a loose puck in the offensive zone, walked in along, and deposited a short-side shot past New England goalie Casey DeSmith.
After a scoreless first period, New England took a 1-0 lead 8:53 into the second period when Brian Hart and Matt Willows fed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk for a goal.
Northeast drew even just 11 seconds later. Dan O'Donoghue got the goal, assisted by Corey Wisnowski and Andrew Bucci.
New England also won the inaugural Elite Showcase back in 2009, defeating Sweden in the title game. The 2011 Elite Showcase featured a junior squad from Russia - the Magnitogorsk Steel Foxes, who finished the tournament at 2-2-1.
