In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the North Iowa Bulls escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Junior Bulldogs.
North Iowa gained the winning advantage on a goal by Jon Severson 16:53 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.
The Bulls pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 12 penalty minutes.
North Iowa was sparked by Severson, who racked up one goal.
The Bulls' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Chicago power plays. North Iowa was held below its usual level of production. The Bulls put an average of 5.1 pucks into the net per game. North Iowa kept Chicago's goalie busy throughout the game, and Sam Harden made 28 saves on 31 shots.
Others who scored for North Iowa included Carmen Dalesandro and Trey Gardner, who scored one goal each. More assists for North Iowa came via Johnny Panvica, Tom Lindgren, Ryan Durant, Joe Burgmeier, and Dylan Zins, who each chipped in one.
The Bulls were unable to stop the Junior Bulldogs from sending pucks towards the net, and Chicago eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.
The Junior Bulldogs were helped by Scott Coash Jr, who had one goal. Coash Jr scored short handed 11:53 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Chicago. Chicago played down a man on Jordan Pitlick's boarding. Toms Taurins also scored for Chicago. In addition, Chicago received assists from Tyler Seltenriech, who had one.
Tommi Ahlgren rejected 29 shots on goal for North Iowa. The Bulls registered one goal on five power play opportunities. The Junior Bulldogs incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
