BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — As the Bloomington Thunder gear up for next week’s USHL Draft, one of its previous draft choices is putting his finishing touches on a stellar first season of junior hockey.
This week, Thunder affiliate Erik Gordon was named Goaltender of the Year for the North American Hockey League’s Midwest Division.
Currently in the midst of a playoff run with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, Gordon played the first part of the season with the Lone Star Brahmas of the NAHL. Between the two teams, Gordon compiled an impressive 24-3-0 record in 32 total regular season appearances. His three total losses were the fewest of any NAHL goaltender, while his 24 wins were good for fourth in the 24-team circuit.
Gordon’s noteworthy statistics were hardly limited to his record this season. A 2015 Phase II pick by the Thunder, Gordon boasted a 1.89 goals-against-average and a .928 save percentage this year. His goals-against-average was good for second in the NAHL, while his save percentage was tied for third in the league.
Gordon also made his USHL debut during the 2016-17 season. The Duluth, Georgia, native saw action in four USHL games with Team’s USA’s Under-17 team, and recorded his first career USHL shutout against the Youngstown Phantoms on Jan. 7 in a 1-0 Team USA win.
Through the first round of the NAHL playoffs, Gordon has picked up three wins and has allowed just four goals in his three starts. He boasts a .950 save percentage during that stretch.
