Soo Firehawks hangs on, beats Decatur Blaze 3-1

Soo Firehawks took the lead against Decatur Blaze in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 3-1 victory.

Soo Firehawks took over the lead for good with a goal by Nick Gordon at 3:17 in the first period. Matthew Majic assisted on the tally.

Decatur Blaze was stymied by Soo Firehawks' netminder Cody Call, who stopped 50 shots during the victory. Call certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 4.9 entering the contest.

Soo Firehawks pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 29 penalty minutes.

Soo Firehawks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Decatur Blaze to score on any of its six power plays. Soo Firehawks forced Decatur Blaze goalie Matthew Hatcher to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

Soo Firehawks was helped by Dustin Brown, who racked up one goal. Brown scored 12:43 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Soo Firehawks. Stephen Hillock picked up the assist. Soo Firehawks also got a goal from Michael Mullen as well.

Decatur Blaze forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 13 minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game Decatur Blaze had been spending in the box. Decatur Blaze's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Soo Firehawks power plays.
