TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Luke Kiel is going to the dogs.

Again.

Just a year after skating for the West Michigan Hounds of the North American Prospects Hockey League, Kiel will be suiting up for the Traverse City Hounds this fall.

The Hounds, winners of three Midwest Junior Hockey League titles from 2012 to 2015, are joining the USA Hockey-sanctioned United States Premier Hockey League next season.

For Kiel, a 1998-born defenseman out of the small town of Gobles, Mich., he’s excitedly looking ahead to the fall.

“Scouting played a big role in getting me to Traverse City,” Kiel explained. “I just simply put myself out there. I bring a strong, controlled game to TC. I can control the pace of the game and lock down the defensive zone.”

Last season with the West Michigan U16 team, Kiel was an NAPHL All-Star and posted two goals and 11 points in 36 games.

“The coaches ran a junior-style environment and it really prepared me for what comes next,” said Kiel. “Before getting to juniors, I know I need to improve my foot speed and put on more muscle. The USPHL is a heavily-scouted league, but I’ll be ready.”

Eventually, Kiel wants to play a high level of college hockey and said a year of development with Traverse City will continue him on that path.
