Around 1,300 people showed up Thursday night to watch the second of a three game series between the Maulers and the Wolverines at Glacier Ice Rink in Missoula. Austin Azzinnaro took advantage of a power play situation less than two minutes into play after Wolverines’ forward Kiefer Helbing got called for tripping. Teammates Corey Schafer and Sawyer Jacobson contributed to Missoula’s first goal of the night. Just a short two and a half minutes later, Jacobson added a goal with assists from Azzinnaro and Sander Mjolnerod giving Missoula a 2-0 lead. Chris Cutshall visited the penalty box for elbowing two minutes after Missoula’s second tally, putting the Maulers back on the power play, but the Wolverines were able to kill off the man advantage with strong play from the penalty killers and goalie Brendan Schultz. Whitefish went to the locker room down two in a tight checking game at the end of the first period. However, slightly over five minutes into period two play, the Maulers took advantage of another power play position when Ian Wiens received a penalty for holding. Missoula’s potent power play struck again. Azzinnaro scored while Jacobson and Schafer contributed, giving Missoula the 3-0 lead. The Wolverines were given an opportunity on the man advantage after Maulers’ player Chris Laporte received a two minute penalty for elbowing, but they were unable to close the gap. The Battle of 93 continued into period three play, and it appeared promising when the Maulers began racking up penalty minutes, granting the Wolverines with three different power play opportunities, but they were unable to deliver. Without a doubt, the Maulers kept goalie Brendan Schultz busy in the nets with Missoula outshooting Whitefish 48-27. Schultz’s outstanding performance kept the Maulers in check, but the Mauler’s defense and goalie Noah Parker would not bend. Things got heated with three minutes left in the game when Maulers’ Matt Chamberlain jumped Whitefish captain Danny Roe; gloves were dropped and a ten bell bout ensued. Both Roe and Chamberlain received five minute penalties for fighting and a game misconduct, which means these two players will not be skating on Friday night when the Wolverines and Maulers battle it out in the final matchup of the series at the Stumptown Ice Den.
