Strathroy falls to LaSalle after surprising comeback

The LaSalle Vipers climbed out of a two-goal hole to beat the Strathroy Rockets, 3-2.

LaSalle never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Vipers trailed 2-0 after a power play goal by Strathroy's Dante Copps at 3:18 in the second period. LaSalle knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Nathan Savage at 5:48 in the third period. The Vipers netted the game winner at 10:58 in the third period on a goal by Savage.

LaSalle was sparked by Nathan Veres, who finished with one goal.

The Vipers forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game LaSalle had been spending in the box. The Rockets were unable to stop the Vipers from sending pucks towards the net, and LaSalle eventually piled up 43 shots on goal.

LaSalle also got points from Brett Primeau, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for LaSalle came via Daniel Beaudoin, who had two and Nikko Sablone and Eric Kirby, who each chipped in one.

Strathroy's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The Rockets surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. Strathroy excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Rockets forced the Vipers goalie Paolo Battisti to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots.

Strathroy was helped by Max Ewart, who registered one goal. Ewart scored on the power play 18:49 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Strathroy. The Rockets had taken the advantage when LaSalle's Connor Rosaasen got sent off for holding stick. TJ Harris picked up the assist. In addition, Strathroy received assists from Shane Bulitka, who had two.

Paolo Battisti made 33 saves for the Vipers on 35 shots. For LaSalle, Nolan Gardiner was ejected from the game. Dane Gubbels rejected 40 shots on goal for Strathroy. The Rockets registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Strathroy ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matthew Stevens was ejected from the game.
